Craft a trade or occupation requiring special skill, especially manual skill.
We have had the fortunate experience of working with many talented people over the past 30 years. We ply our trade in a coastal community that is rich with local knowledge and skill. 'Craft' to us is about the rapport among craftsmen working together to create a certain project. From early on it has been the goal here at Sloth Boats to cultivate the skills and develop the facilities necessary to master our trade together and to satisfy the expectations of those who commission our work.
OUR BUSINESS GOALS:
Traditionally, the discipline in which we work, which is boatbuilding, has been considered 'craft'. And it remains so today. 'Craft' to us means that the concept, the design and the creation of a piece are all one integral process. Design and production are not far removed from each other. The processes of mass production are not readily applicable to the custom nature of 'one-off' boatbuilding and repair. Neither are the dehumanizing forces of the modern factory floor present in 'craft'. In craft, the quality of the result is not predetermined; instead, it depends on the skill that the maker exercises as he works. Few experiences have a more wholesome meaning than to put your hands to the work, knowing the material and the processes, and watching a concept become a physical object, with form and function. Regardless whether the methods are traditional or original, to be a designer/maker breeds contentment. The use of advanced materials and modern processes is not a hindrance to craft, rather they open up new creative opportunities. 'Craft' is always contemporary because it is an expression of one's vision within a specific time and place.
